Fr. John R. Nugent, S.J., is a native of Houston, Texas, and attended Strake Jesuit College Preparatory. Following in his parents’ footsteps, Fr. Nugent went to Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, where he directed two retreat programs and volunteered for the Student Counseling HelpLine. After graduating with a bachelor’s in biology and a minor in psychology in 2004, he entered the Jesuits. His formation has brought him to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas and Baja California several times, to an inner-city job-training program in New Orleans, and accompanying student groups on international immersion experiences. In 2009, after receiving his master’s in philosophy from Saint Louis University and assisting at Loyola Academy of Saint Louis, he joined the faculty at Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. There Fr. Nugent taught chemistry, helped with various student activities, and facilitated adult spirituality groups on campus. In 2012 he received the Patrick Koch, S.J., Award for the faculty member nominated by the student body as most representative of an Ignatian educator.

Most recently, Fr. Nugent earned two master’s degrees in theology at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, and he will complete a master’s in education in curriculum and instruction this May. While in Boston, he has engaged in sacramental and faith formation ministry in several Catholic schools and two archdiocesan parishes: Our Lady of Grace in Chelsea/Everett and Saint Mary of the Assumption in Revere. In June, he will take up an academic support position at Arrupe Jesuit High School, one of 30 Cristo Rey schools in the U.S.
